São Tomé & Príncipe: the fast, affordable route
São Tomé launched its official citizenship-by-investment program in 2025, and it’s now the fastest and most affordable in the world. A donation from about $90,000 can secure citizenship in roughly 2–3 months, fully remotely, with no residency, no interview, and your whole family included. It’s open to almost every nationality — very few are restricted.
The honest trade-off is travel power: the São Tomé passport gives visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to a more limited set of mostly African and some Asian destinations, and it is not visa-free to Europe, the UK, or the US. Its real strengths are speed, cost, family inclusion — and a quieter advantage: as a member of the Portuguese-speaking community (CPLP), its citizens get simplified access to Portuguese residence and a faster, seven-year route to Portuguese naturalisation over time.
Dominica: the stronger passport
Dominica’s program has run since 1993 and is one of the most established in the world. The investment is higher — from about $200,000 — but the passport is stronger, giving visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 140-plus countries, including Europe’s Schengen Area. (Honestly: it is not visa-free to the UK, since 2023, or the US.) It’s the better choice when global travel power is your priority — for those who qualify.
Which is right for you?
If you want a second passport quickly and affordably, or a straightforward family Plan B, São Tomé is hard to beat. If travel power including Europe matters most and you can make the larger investment, Dominica leads — though eligibility for these programs varies by nationality, and the rules genuinely change from year to year.
